Home On The Range – Odder than the Otters Fall Tour

Indie-folk rockers, Odder than the Otters released their debut EP, The Port of Lopez, back in spring and has been steadily building their audience on a local scale. Armed with a new repertoire of songs, the group is ready to hit the road and sprinkle their upbeat dance numbers throughout Central and Western Canada.

On the cusp of kicking off their first ever out-of-province tour, Odder than the Otters spoke with us about finding a balance between partying and being professional, tips for the road and how they develop the perfect setlist.

CH: What can audiences expect from an Odder Than The Otters live show?
OTTO: An intimate, in your face, high-energy rock n’ roll dance party.

CH: How do you find a balance between old material and newer songs?
OTTO: We have been consistently adding new material to our set while simultaneously cutting songs that don’t measure up in feel and energy. Quite recently, we have found our pocket and developed a set blending our classics and the new where we can feel at home throughout an entire show. We can hardly wait to get into the studio to record our new songs!

The bigger cities like Edmonton and Calgary are exciting simply because of their size and the opportunities they hold for us.

CH: What tips will you take with you from other bands on this tour?
OTTO: Always remember that tomorrow you have to drive and play another show then do that again the next day, and again, and again. We’re going to have to find a balance between having fun and developing new relationships with getting rest, eating as well as we can afford to, and further deepening our Otter bond.

CH: Any cities you are most excited about?
OTTO: This is the first tour that all four Otters have gone on, so we are itching with excitement for all the shows we have booked. The bigger cities like Edmonton and Calgary are exciting simply because of their size and the opportunities they hold for us. With that being said, Flav’r Country Ranch in Langenburg might be the most anticipated. People have told us how awesome this community is, and how well they take care of you. It sounds like it could end up being the most intimate gig of our tour and a perfect way to send us home.

CH: Are there certain songs that you think will go over better than others in terms of live performance?
OTTO: We have a very dynamic set. Each song has its place and fits in somewhere within every set we create. With that being said, some songs serve as a means to get to that song that makes everyone go wild. We’ve got to get the audience tapping their foot before they’re going to bang their head.

CH: If you could plan a dream tour, where and with whom would you tour with?
OTTO: We would love to play all over North America and also tap into the European scene. As for acts, if we’re talking dreams, we think Alabama Shakes and Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats would be a nice fit.
