To Kill A Monster

Alt-rock/pop-rock

This summer, we’re excited to be the Main Stage Sponsors for the inaugural Sunspot Music Festival in Morristown, Indiana! The multi-band outdoor festival features over 40 acts from in and around the mid-west & east America! Acts range from alt-rock to hip-hop and pop.

We spoke with Joey Lawson (vocalist), Josh Spence (bassist) and Scott Baker (guitarist) from alt-rock outfit, To Kill A Monster. They’ll be playing Sunspot Music Fest on June 16th.

SPF: What inspired you to play music?
JL: Bands making it look fun, to be honest. For most of us, we continue to play music not because we choose to, but because it chose us. As corny as it sounds, we consider it to be more of a calling than anything. We want to create something that could have a positive impact on someone’s life or even just their day, the same way music changed our lives. We want to make a difference in the world and if nothing else, leave something truly special behind.

SPF: What’s your favorite thing about your local music scene?
JL: The diversity; so many different genres and people from different backgrounds. A lot of bands in Columbus put so much time and effort into their sound they seem like they’re already signed. We could name a couple dozen that should have been signed years ago. So many new and old bands have worked together for so long as well that it just feels like family.

SPF: What’s your favorite part of your live show?
JL: All of it. The live show is where everything comes together. It’s where we feel alive and call home. It’s the jovial absurdity that comes with how much fun we have playing together, and all the interactions with the fans that support this crazy dream that we love.

We want to create something that could have a positive impact on someone’s life or even just their day, the same way music changed our lives.

SPF: What’s the one thing you hope people take from listening to your music?
JL: Anything. Let it fix your bad day and forget about everything that’s wrong in the world for a second. Let it help you get over that break-up, or give you a chance to scream. Let it be the song that reminds you of one happy day or that special someone. Let it remind you of your favorite cartoon, or help you celebrate the life of someone you lost. But if we had to pick one thing above all else then it would just be to enjoy this life and remember all the wide-eyed dreams you had as a kid. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and life is supposed to be fun. Live, have fun, laugh, dream, and party the way everyone forgot how to with each passing year.

SPF: Which band member would you swap places with for one show and why?
JS:  Honestly, none of them. They all have something special they bring to the table and I don’t feel like I would do their parts justice.

SB:  Probably Josh because I have so much fun playing the bass. I’ve been playing guitar for so long that when I get a bass in my hands I just go bonkers. I’ve traded places with Joey when I took over lead vocals for a show he couldn’t make it to. That was a blast! That was long before I ever even thought being in the band was a possibility.

JL: Guitar for sure. Not that it’s easier by any means, but I would love to completely rock out through the guitar instead of being tied down to the mic focusing on pitch, breath support, lyrics, showmanship, banter, and everything. You know, that or drums so we’d actually have a drummer right now. So if you love what we do, reach out to us because we need someone to finish this roster!
